Understanding senior living costs
Senior living costs are a source of confusion for almost every family, and the confusion is expensive. Communities quote different numbers in different ways, and "the price" rarely tells the whole story. Here is how to understand what you are really looking at, without a calculator anxiety attack.
The sticker price versus the true cost
The monthly rate quoted by a community usually covers the essentials of that level of care: housing, meals, and the services associated with it. But the true cost lives in the details: which levels of care are included, how additional care is priced, what services cost extra, and how the rate can change as needs increase. Two communities with similar sticker prices can have very different true costs over a year.
What is usually included
Across most communities, the base rate includes the apartment, meals, utilities, housekeeping, activities, transportation, and basic assistance consistent with the level of care. Ask explicitly what is in the base rate and what is not, in writing. The differences between communities are often in the fine print: which meds are managed, how many baths are included, what happens when care needs rise.
What usually costs extra
Common extras include higher levels of care, medication management, incontinence care, specialized dining, guest meals, phone and cable, and some transportation. Some communities charge a one-time community or buy-in fee. Ask each community the same list of questions, get the answers in writing, and compare apples to apples.
How the home fits into the picture
For many families, the equity in the family home is what funds senior living. That makes the timing of a home sale a financial decision as well as an emotional one. Understanding the monthly cost of a community and the proceeds available from the home, including what holding the home costs while you wait, is part of a realistic plan.
