Home modifications that may help someone age in place

By Vashon Hargrove

Many of the reasons a family home stops working for an older adult are fixable. A handful of well-chosen modifications can turn a beloved but challenging home into a place where aging in place is genuinely possible. Here are the changes that tend to matter most, in plain language.

Bathrooms first

The bathroom is where most home falls happen, so it is where modifications pay off most. Grab bars at the toilet and in the shower, a walk-in shower with a low threshold, a non-slip floor, and a raised toilet can make the highest-risk room dramatically safer. A professional should install grab bars into structure, not just into tile.

Stairs and steps

Stairs are the other great risk. Handrails on both sides, secure even surfaces on every step, bright lighting at the top and bottom, and, where needed, a stair lift or a first-floor bedroom can remove the barrier entirely. Many families are surprised how much of the problem is lighting and contrast rather than the stairs themselves.

Lighting and contrast

Older eyes need more light, and they need to see the edges of things. Brighter, even lighting, night lights along paths to the bathroom, light switches at room entrances, and contrasting edges on steps and counters reduce falls and confusion more than most people expect. This is one of the cheapest and most effective categories of change.

Entries and everyday reach

A step-free or low-threshold entry, a handrail at the front door, and a clear path from car to door keep the outside safe in all seasons. Inside, moving daily-use items to easy reach, clearing high and low cupboards, and arranging furniture into clear walking paths reduce strain and risk around the clock.

Who should plan and install modifications

Modifications are structural decisions, not weekend guesses. A Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist can assess the home and plan changes that fit the person and the budget. When design and construction work is the answer, Vashon draws on his Maryland Licensed Home Improvement Contractor credential (MHIC #155639) to help families understand what a home really needs, connect with trusted professionals, and guide the project through completion.
